Strategies for Somewhere Else to Plan:
1. Know Thy Students: It is imperative that teachers know their students and their needs. This includes students with IEPs and 504 plans, as well as English Language Learners. Effective supports can only be offered to students when the teacher is aware of student strengths and needs. (Wong, Harry 1991) 2. Zero Indifference: Rather than promoting a zero tolerance environment, a zero indifference policy is more effective in addressing student behaviors and needs. This switch in perspective allows the teacher to be more available to the student and also raises student accountability for responsible behavior. (Villa, R.A. Thousand, J.S. & Nevin, A.I. (2010)) 3. Take a Break: Provide students with a hall pass for 5 minutes to walk to a location on campus and back to class. This break would be used to decompress and recenter the student. When appropriate, a peer can accompany the student. 4. Planning Room: When appropriate, send student to a predesignated room where student can calm down, reflect, and craft a written plan for re-entering the classroom. This room is set aside specifically for this purpose and is not combined with other functions; a trained adult must be available to support students in the planning room. (Villa, R.A. Thousand, J.S. & Nevin, A.I. (2010)) |
